Montessori Primary Scope and Sequence

This is one of the things that has made the BIGGEST difference in my life in directing children.  I came across a scope and sequence that a school used years ago.  It was very confusing, but I knew that it would be of immense value to my own children.  I took it, and decided that I would decode what was there and make it easier for myself and others to understand.

The Curriculum Elements that are Covered in this Scope and Sequence are:

• Language Arts
• Mathematics
• History
• Geography
• Science

This is NOT a manual for how to present lessons, but rather a detailed look at what is covered during the years of Primary Education.  It is, in my opinion, of UPMOST importance that anyone teaching by the Montessori Method have Manuals (go to this link for my favorite manuals)  This Scope & Sequence can help someone using this method for learning to understand where they are going and what materials they REALLY need.  I could have used it especially early on when it felt like there was SO MUCH to learn and understand.  Once I had this Scope and Sequence, I could wrap my brain around it.

Also of importance is that this Scope and Sequence covers through age 5, or when a child would be entering a public school Kindergarten, and not through age 6.  There is another Scope and Sequence for older children (ages 5-9), and another for even older children (ages 9-12), but I do not currently have them completed.  As I get them completed I will post them as well.

This Montessori Primary Scope & Sequence is particularly suited for keeping records with small groups of children, such as in a homeschooling environment, or a smaller classroom.   It is my suggestion that one set should be made for each child you are working with so that accurate records can be kept.  I also suggest that anyone using this Scope and Sequence spend some time studying what they find here.  Instructions for use are included, and if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.  Larger classrooms can certainly benefit from this, but for record keeping will probably find it better to use one of the available record keeping programs such as Montessori Buddy.

Don't think that you need to have this Scope & Sequence handy for your students every day.  For the daily tracking of my students, I love this idea from My Montessori Journey.  When I have one or two week's daily work noted on the clipboard, I will transfer that information to the Scope & Sequence in the binder with that child's name.  I will also make a copy of the daily tracking sheet and place it in the binder for easy reference.  I do not like the simple tracking with X's since I do not know how well the child has actually mastered the curriculum element.  I want to feel that I have a very good understanding of where each child is.
